Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is an independent, nonprofit research institute. Their distinguished scientists use innovative approaches to study the health of the world’s oceans and find ways to harvest its resources to improve lives by fusing the best of scientific inquiry and entrepreneurial ingenuity. To foster continued discovery and innovation, Harriman is currently designing a major expansion of the existing campus.  The expansion responds to the organization’s strategic focus on increased research, education and public engagement. The program comprises multi-purpose space, offices, labs and support spaces. The design integrates the program seamlessly into the existing fabric of the campus. Generous expanses of glazing mitigate massing and enhance connections to the striking natural surroundings. Sustainable, resilient and agile, the new wing reflects the nimble, forward-looking posture of Bigelow Laboratory while acting as a catalyst for continued scientific breakthroughs.

At the heart of the project is the 3,000 square foot “Forum.” This agile multi-purpose meeting space will enable to Bigelow to host events, gatherings and conferences of varying scales in a flexible, technology-rich environment that invites collaboration and interaction. A robust suite of new research and teaching labs will accommodate an expanded strategic partnership with higher education partners.
