Nestling this large building into a hillside reduced its visual impact and
took advantage of a small, steep site with numerous easements. Open round-the-clock,
the facility handles mail from over 250 local post offices in Eastern Maine.
Loading docks and main entrances are bathed in sunlight on winter days.
And light from the inside the facility turns a two-story stair tower into
a beacon after dark, giving night-shift workers a cheerful entrance.
The insulated aluminum panels on the exterior were specially selected to
keep humidity and temperature levels needed to operate mail-sorting equipment.
