New Kennebunk Elementary School will be filled with imaginative details
Children in Kennebunk will have company for lunch at the new elementary
school when it opens in fall 2004: Rabbits playing hopscotch. Moose flying
kites. Squirrels on a tree swing.
Whimsical silhouettes of these and three other animals at play will sit
between the windows in the cafeteria of the new building. Made of colorful
vinyl squares, 30 inches by 30 inches, the silhouettes are one expression
of the theme that guided the design: Celebrate the Wonder of Being a Child.
Groundbreaking for the new $12 million school will be held Friday, June
27, with shuttle buses running from Kennebunk High School to the Alewife
Road site from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and returning to the high school from
5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Harriman Associates, a full-service architecture and engineering firm in
Auburn and Portland, designed the school. Eckman Construction of Bedford,
New Hampshire, is the general contractor. Construction is expected to be
complete by fall 2004.
Three 200-student "villages"
Designed to fit the "schools-within-a-school" concept, the new facility
will have three "villages" for 200 students each and will have room for
K-3 students who now attend Park Street and Cousens schools. The villages
are carefully planned so that the woods on the site can be seen, emphasizing
a connection with nature.
The school is designed with the child in mind. "Each village has a distinct
character and everything is scaled down to reflect what an elementary school
child would see," said Daniel W. Cecil, AIA, a partner at the firm and leader
of the educational design studio. Harriman Associates worked closely with
staff and parents at both schools to develop the design. "We defined the
body of the building, but we needed their help with the soul of the building," he added.
Inspriational quotations
Six inspirational quotations selected by the school staffs will appear on
friezes throughout the building. Two were developed by the staffs, including
the one that will be in the main lobby: Look through the eyes of a child
to see the wonders of the world.
As part of the groundbreaking ceremony, attendees will form a large "KES" in the field and aerial photos will be taken. Each person will receive a
pre-labeled plastic bag to take a piece of the groundbreaking gravel home
as a souvenir.
