Noble High School wins ninth design award

Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine, will receive its ninth award for excellence in design Thursday, April 17, with the presentation of the William W. Caudill Award by American School & University magazine.

Joe Agron, editor-in-chief of the Kansas-based publication, will present the award at the SAD 60 school board meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. at the high school in North Berwick.

Harriman Associates, a full-service architecture and engineering firm in Auburn and Portland, Maine, designed the 1,500-student, 270,000-sq.-ft. school, which opened in September 2001.

Honor recognizes pioneering architect
The award is the highest in an annual competition for educational architecture that has been sponsored by the magazine for twenty years and honors a man whose ideas on school architecture made him an authority in the field. Caudill (1914-1983), a Texas architect, pioneered the concept of "architecture by team." He championed humanistic design and believed that those who use a school building should be involved in designing it. The Houston firm he founded became internationally known.

"We are especially honored that Noble was selected for this award, because the process for designing the school was so aligned with Caudill's ideas," said Harriman Associates architect Daniel W. Cecil, AIA, who led the design team. "Community involvement in the design was intense, involving teachers, staff, students, parents, and administrators, and included a workshop open to everyone in the three towns in the school district. Noble is truly a community school," added Cecil, who is also a partner in the firm.

Noble High School has received eight other design awards:
