4, 2000 Harriman Associates designing upgrades at 4 technical colleges Harriman Associates, a full-service architecture and engineering firm based in Auburn, has been selected to design renovations and additions to upgrade facilities and technology at four of Maine's technical colleges. A $4.3 million project at York County Technical College in Wells is currently under construction. Three other projects are slated for construction next year: a $3.25 million project at Central Maine Technical College in Auburn, a $5 million project at Southern Maine Technical College in South Portland and a $3.4 million project at Kennebec Valley Technical College in Fairfield. The work is part of a $26 million bond act approved by voters last November to fund improvements at all seven institutions in the technical college system. York County Technical College At YCTC, a second wing is being added to the main building, giving the college room to expand popular programs in computer technology and early childhood education and to develop new programs in multimedia technology. Computer and science labs, classrooms and expansions of the library and cafeteria are included as well as additional parking. Construction is expected to be substantially complete by fall semester 2001. Central Maine Technical College At CMTC, a new Technical Learning Center linked to the college's Jalbert Hall will have new computerized presentation facilities and several different types of computer classrooms that can be adapted for use in a number of programs. The center will enable CMTC to provide greater access to its programs. With the new classrooms, the college will be able to develop high-demand programs and accommodate the needs of students in the new associate in arts program. New parking spaces next to the addition will also be constructed. The work is expected to be complete in time for spring semester 2002. Southern Maine Technical College Work at SMTC will include a new computer technology center. Laboratories and classrooms in the new center will serve programs such as computer technology, graphics technology and design, and administrative office management. Howe Hall, which houses law enforcement and fire science programs, will also be renovated. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2002. Kennebec Valley Technical College A new building at KVTC will have multimedia classrooms to help the college expand its information technology programs and will house a new library, which will be double the size of the existing one. It will also have meeting rooms and provide needed on-campus study areas for the commuting students who make up the student body. Completion is scheduled for March 2002. Harriman Associates provides architecture and engineering design services for education, government, commercial and health care clients throughout New England. Based in Auburn, the firm was founded in 1870 and is the sixth-oldest design firm in the country. back to list |
