Harriman Associates featured in 7 national magazines

Seven national magazines featured projects by architects and engineers at Harriman Associates during the last three months of 1999.

Articles written by the firm appeared in Athletic Business, Aquatics International, Facilities Manager, and American School & University (AS&U) magazines. In addition, Architectural Record and School Construction News articles highlighted Noble High School, designed by the firm and now under construction in North Berwick. And Cadalyst magazine described computer render
ing used by the firm in the design of the John J. Nissen Baking Co. in Biddeford.

Erik D. W. Greven, a structural engineer and principal of the firm, wrote two articles about the importance of conducting studies to evaluate the condition of aging pool facilities. "A Study in Safety" appeared in the November/December issue of Aquatics International, and "Hidden Dangers" was in the October issue of Athletic Business magazine. Winthrop S. Knox, principal and senior design consultant with Northeast Aquatic Design in Peabody, Mass., coauthored the latter.

Both articles describe the problems that can occur in pools two or three decades old due to the corrosion caused by chemicals used to treat the water and point out that the most serious, structural damage often goes undetected because it's not easily seen. A study by a team of architects, engineers, and pool-design specialists, however, can uncover problems and develop a plan for making cost-effective corrections.

Clifton W. Greim, a mechanical engineer and partner in the firm, coauthored two articles about commissioning -- a procedure to ensure that all the components in complex heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) are installed and work together as designed Both were written with David D'Angelo, assistant director for planning and construction at Bowdoin College.

"The Bowdoin College Experience with Commissioning" appeared in the November/December Facilities Manager. "HVAC Trials" appeared in the December issue of AS&U. Since HVAC systems contain hundreds of interrelated components, one weak link can compromise the effectiveness of an entire system. The articles describe how commissioning puts all parts of a system through a thorough check and trial run before a new or renovated building is occupied.

"Open Door Policies" in the November issue of Architectural Record includes Noble High School as an example of schools across the country "designed for interdisciplinary hands-on learning and interaction with the community." Partner Daniel W. Cecil is the project architect for Noble, slated for completion in September 2001.

An architect's rendering is included with the article as well as with "Maine School Designed for Innovative Teaching" in "the November/ December issue of "School Construction News,"which describes the design of the new school.

The October issue of Cadalyst, a magazine for users of software that enables computer-assisted design, shows the realistic computer renderings that gave Nissen management a clear vision of the new bakery facility Harriman Associates had designed for them.

Harriman Associates is a full-service architecture and engineering firm headquartered in Auburn, Maine. Founded in 1870, it is the sixth-oldest design firm in the country, providing services to clients throughout New England.
