Harriman designs have been featured in many national magazines and received numerous awards for design excellence over the years.

Noble High School This innovative 1,500-student high school has garnered twelve awards for design excellence. These include Knowledge Works Foundation "Schools as Centers of Community Honor Society 2004", the Shirley Cooper Administrators/American Institute of Architects /The Council of Educational Facility Planners, International (CEFPI); a finalist for CEFincluding an award from the Boston Society of Architects; the William W. Caudill Citation Award, the most prestigious given in a competition by American School & University magazine; and the Shirley Cooper Award from the American Association of School Administrators/American Institute of Architects/The Council of Educational Facility Planners, International (CEFPI). Noble has also received a Grand Prize from the Mass Networks Education partnership; a Citation Award in American School Board Journal's Learning by Design competition; a Bronze Citation from American School & University's 2002 Interiors Showcase; and Honorable Mention in School Planning & Management magazine's 2002 Education Design Showcase.

Noble has also been featured in numerous national magazines. In January 2003, it was featured in School Planning & Management's "Building Blueprints: Entryways, Lobbies, Hallways, and Gathering Places," and in March 2003 was featured in Engineered Systems' "The Maine Point: Maine's Noble Success." It was the "School of the Month" in the January 2002 issue of School Construction News and was included in the article "Open Door Policies" in the November 1999 issue of Architectural Record. New England Construction magazine's April 10, 2000, cover story described how we were able to meet schedules and budgets by fine tuning the school's design to meet the realities of the construction market.

Noble has also been chosen for exhibition at the 2003 National School Boards Association T + L2: Leading Learning to a Higher Level Conference; the 2003 National School Boards Association Exhibition of School Architecture; the New England Architects' Exhibition at Build Boston 2003/2002; and the Exhibition of School Planning & Architecture at CEFPI's 2002 Annual Conference.

Fryeburg Academy, Bion R. Cram Library was
recognized for Outstanding Architecture and Design in Education by School Planning & Management, 2004 Education Design Showcase, Honorable Mention. Fryeburg Academy was also selected by the National School Boards Association for inclusion in the 2004 Learning by Design, an annual publication for school leaders which highlights exemplary school design.

Kennebec Valley Community College, Lunder Library This new library-information technology center was selected by American School & University for inclusion in its 2004 Architectural Portfolio of Outstanding School & University Design and was awarded an Honorable Mention by the College Planning & Management magazine's 2004 Education Design Showcase.

St. Dominic Regional High School This Catholic college preparatory school was selected by the National School Boards Association for inclusion in the 2003 Learning by Design, an annual publication for school leaders which highlights exemplary school design.

Maine Air National Guard, Civil Engineering Building The light-filled, abstract design of this building received design excellence awards from the U.S. Air Force and the American Institute of Architects and is featured in the October 2000 issue of Metal Architecture magazine.

University of Maine, Memorial Union The renovation and addition to this student center New England Real Estate Journal selected the renovation and addition to this student center as its project of the month in May 2000. This student center was also awarded an Honorable Mention in School Planning & Management magazine's 2003 Education Design Showcase.

Portland Museum of Art Engineering Systems magazine April 2003 issue featured in "Suitable for Framing" an article coauthored by two of our engineers and describes the HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air-conditioning) challenges in this two-decade old building.

Maine Medical Center, Scarborough Campus Created from a defunct shopping center, this patient-friendly, high-tech health care facility is featured in Building Type Basics for Healthcare Facilities, a reference book printed in 2000 for design professionals. The center also receieved a Grand Award in October 1999 in a design competition sponsored by the National Commercial Builders Council. It was also featured in the November 1998 issue of Health Facilities Management magazine.

Brunswick High School The distinctive design and features of this school have impressed the editors of 10 national magazines. Articles have appeared in American School & University (AS&U), Landscape Architecture, Building Operating Management, Energy User News, School Planning & Management, Engineered Systems, Education Week, Water Environment & Technology, Interiors, and Engineering News-Record (ENR). The school was selected by AS&U for inclusion in its 1996 Architectural Portfolio of Outstanding School & University Design, and won an Award of Excellence from the National Commercial Builders Council.

Central Maine Medical Center, The Sam & Jennie Bennett Breast Care Center Building Type Basics for Healthcare Facilities uses this center for comprehensive breast care services as a case study of effective design. The book, printed in 2000, provides architects with essential information to jump-start a project.

Carrie Ricker Middle School This rural middle school was selected by the American School Board Journal for inclusion in the 1999 Learning by Design, an annual publication for school leaders which highlights exemplary school design. The school was also the subject of an article written by two Harriman Associates' architects that was the cover story in the April 1999 issue of School Planning & Management magazine.

John J. Nissen Baking Company The realistic computer renderings that were integral to the design of the new production facility for this regional bakery were featured in an article in the October 1999 issue of Cadalyst magazine.

U.S. Postal Service The modern, abstract design of this regional mail processing facility in Hampden, Maine, won a Maine AIA Design Excellence award in 1995 and won a Merit Award from the National Commercial Builders Council for Best Large Scale Public Facility this year. The energy-saving features of the building were described in a June 1995 article in Energy User News and the design was the cover story in the October 2000 issue of Metal Architecture magazine.

Southern Maine Technical College Peter A. McKernan Hospitality Center This renovation of a turn-of-the-century building at Southern Maine Technical College won a Citation Award in 1994 from American School & University magazine as one of the best educational architectural designs in the country. The building was transformed into an elegant, small inn that serves as a training center for culinary arts and hotel management students in South Portland, Maine. Most recently, it was featured in the April 1995 issue of Hospitality Design.

Lewiston Middle School Auditorium A high-tech renovation transformed this functional, 1950s-era school auditorium into a community performing arts center with the latest sound, lighting, and rigging equipment.
American School & University magazine included the design in its 1994 Architectural Portfolio of Outstanding School and University Designs. School Planning & Management wrote about the auditorium in its September 1995 issue.

Lewiston City Hall The renovation of this historic landmark in Maine won a Design Excellence award from the Maine chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1993 and was featured in the September 1995 issue of Contract Design.

Maine District Courthouse Progressive Architecture: P/A Plans cited this Presque Isle, Maine, courthouse as one of three dozen examples of significant public building projects throughout the country in 1993.

Vanceboro Elementary School In October 1994, School & College featured this 8,000- sq.-ft. school built for 25 students on the Maine/Canada border as a creative example of one of the last small rural schools to be built in the nation.

Messalonskee High School Chosen as an outstanding high school design by American School & University in 1993, this Oakland, Maine, school has an auditorium and library that gets heavy use by the community.

Shaw's Supermarkets The Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts presented a Performance Award to Harriman Associates in 1993 for renovation of a supermarket in Waltham, Massachusetts, and in 1995 for renovation of another in Revere, Massachusetts.

Carnegie Science Building, Bates College This renovation and expansion of a 1913 building created a state-of-the-art teaching and research complex at a small liberal-arts college in Lewiston, Maine. The design won a 1992 competition by the Boston Society of Architects as one of the best examples of "new" New England architecture. It was featured in a display that appeared at the national convention of the American Institute of Architects and that later toured the United States for a year. The design was also included in the 1989 Architectural Portfolio of Outstanding School and University Buildings published by American School & University.

Sawyer Environmental Research Center This facility at the University of Maine in Orono won a Design Excellence award in 1989 from the Maine Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was included in the 1988 Architectural Portfolio of Outstanding School and University Building Designs published by American School & University.

High Street Congregational Church -The Boston Society of Architects selected this Auburn, Maine, church as an example of "new" New England architecture in 1992. All the designs selected were featured in a display at the national convention of the American Institute of Architects and were part of an exhibit that toured the United States for a year.
