This new center made it possible for the university to enhance its graduate
research program in highly sophisticated fields such as environmental
chemistry.
The building is not only designed for current research,
but can also be easily reconfigured as needs change. Electrical, plumbing,
and mechanical systems serving the laboratories, for example, are exposed
in the corridors for easy access and modification.
Although research needs dictated a two-story building
with high ceilings, elements like the hipped roof provide a human scale
that complements the wooded setting.
